Americord Cord Blood Processing, What is our Process?

LoungingBaby 300x200 Americord Cord Blood Processing, What is our Process? We often get questions from clients who want to know more about our cord blood process and how we compare to other banks.  Some cord blood banks store collections without separating the part of the collection that contains stem cells; this is not the best method. When cord blood arrives at our laboratory it is separated by weight via centrifugation. The part of cord blood that contains stem cells is called the buffy coat and it also contains white blood cells. The rest of the cord blood contains a combination of plasma and red blood cells which are not used in the treatment of diseases. This separation accomplishes two things, it makes the collection easier to use after being thawed because it will no longer require the separation of the cells at a later time.  It also allows a smaller concentration of the cryoprotectant agent that can be toxic in high quantities. We go a step further and separate the collection into a bag with 2 integral segments. The bag contains a majority of the collection. The two attached segments are smaller volumes to be used for HLA testing, which is usual done when the collection is being considered for a medical therapy.

Can Cord Blood Cure Aids?

000aaaaaimg 300x178 Can Cord Blood Cure Aids?It seems that every week new research is being conducted into uses for cord blood and cord tissue. Most recently a cord blood transplant is being used at the University of Minnesota in an attempt to cure a young boy with Aids AND Leukemia. See our press release about cord blood research; we discuss the stunning increase in number of diseases treated with cord blood in just five years, and how that increase correlates directly with the number of clinical trials researching cord blood uses. In 2008 there were 78 ongoing clinical trials and only 39 diseases had been treated with cord blood, by the end of 2012 the number of clinical trials grew to 191 and the number of diseases treated using cord blood is now 81. This means that there was a 144% increase in clinical trials for cord blood and a 145% increase in the number of diseases treated in the same time period. You can find information about ongoing clinical trials and up-to-date information on cord blood research on the government run website clinicaltrials.gov. See what diseases have been treated with cord blood on our website.

The Maternal Blood Draw

shutterstock 8481874 200x300 The Maternal Blood DrawWhen you bank your baby’s cord blood, the mother will be required to provide a blood sample.  Our lab will use this sample to do an infectious disease screening, which is kept on file with your baby’s cord blood.  It is an FDA requirement; if you ever need your baby’s cord blood the attending medical professional will get a copy of this report. Sometimes, getting a sample of the mother’s blood becomes more challenging than anyone expects.  This blood sample must be drawn prior to receiving 2 liters of IV fluid when the IV fluids have crystalloids, colloids or other blood products. Most mothers receive IV fluids with crystalloids during labor.  And sometimes they forget to ask their nurse or doctor to do the blood draw prior to receiving IV fluids.

If this happens to you, do not panic, this is something that happens all of the time and is easily resolved. If you receive 2 liters of fluid before the blood draw you can simply wait one hour after completing the IV fluids and ask a medical professional to do the blood draw before the courier arrives to pick-up your baby’s cord blood and bring it to our lab.

If this is not possible we’ll send you a new maternal blood draw kit which you can use when you see your doctor for a follow-up visit.  The kit has everything you need, including a return FedEx label with our lab’s address and our FedEx account number so we pay the shipping charge. So, if this happens to you, don’t worry. You’ve got a new baby to enjoy, let us handle the rest.

Expecting parents today have so many decisions they have to make before their baby is born.  Some parents are deciding to delay the clamping of their baby’s umbilical cord because this blood is rich in iron and can help prevent iron deficiency in newborns.  Many parents are misinformed and think they must make a decision between delayed clamping and cord blood banking.  That is not true.  Read our press release with important information on the benefits of doing both – delayed clamping and cord blood banking.
